Math in Art
It has been said that one mathematical connection with art is that some individuals known as artists have needed to develop or use mathematical thinking to carry out their artistic vision. Brentwood third grade learners have perfected their math and art skills as they worked on the “Math in Art” learning experience and presented their work at an afternoon Art Gallery show.
Our learners incorporated shapes, fractions, area and perimeter, and patterns into their artwork. The goal was to create an art gallery to make connections of how art impacts community. Third grade educator, Miss Deren, explained, “We invited all classrooms, families, as well as many members from the community to view the amazing artwork we have created and hear about the math skills they used to make them.” Many Brentwood families were in attendance along with members of the Des Plaines Fire Department, Mount Prospect Mayor Arlene Juracek, Des Plaines Alderman Dick Sayad, representatives of School District 59 administration, and District 59 board member, Sharon Roberts.
Ben Grey, District 59 Assistant Superintendent for Innovative Learning and Communication was one art gallery guest who Tweeted, “Impressive work, @Brentwood_Bears third graders. Quite the display of creativity and mathematical thinking at the Math in Art Gallery. Thanks for the great explanations of your art pieces. Outstanding communication skills in action.”
The Art Gallery was a huge success! Thank you to all of those that supported our learners and made such a positive impact on our students and helped us build community!
